David Jiménez, director of El Mundo, attended another edition of ATREVIA gatherings, where he shared his point of view on the current world of Journalism and the challenges that the sector faces at the moment.
Núria Vilanova, founder and president of ATREVIA, thanked the director of El Mundo for his participation in the meeting and emphasized his extensive and diverse professional career. David Jiménez dedicated more than 10 years as the correspondent of the newspaper in Asia, covering wars like the one in Afghanistan, the Burma revolution and tragedies like Fukushima. After this experience, he decided to move to the United States in 2014 where he dedicated part of his time to studying in Harvard University and going into more detail on the new digital challenges that the press faces. After more than 20 years in El Mundo, he was then given the opportunity to lead the national newspaper at the time when the profession was being converted.
During the gathering, David Jiménez shared some interesting reflections on the project that he manages in El Mundo. He assured that “it is absolutely essential to face the digital transformation challenge but at the same time, we should stay loyal to the journalistic essence and values that have brought us this far: rigor, credibility in our product and the search for truth”. In this sense, he assured that “the survival of any journalist goes through innovation and the transformation of the business model but at the same time, continue being useful for all citizens”.
In front of some questions like the current situation of the journalism profession, David Jiménez confirms that “in spite of the big tsunami that the sector suffered, we are before a horizon of opportunities. Thanks to the Internet, we have presence in more than 70 countries and 10 million spectators of our audiovisual content which was unthinkable before. Now, more than ever, the readers are the kings because they decide what content they want to consume”. That is why any journalistic project should be balanced between two main factors, according to David, “the newspaper should aim its offer to the reader’s interest and the intellectual project”.
ATREVIA’s gatherings are a format in which different personalities from the corporate, social and political world of our country exposes their opinions on diverse current topics and expertise in areas of interest.
