Latin American Keys is an informative and analytical summary regarding the political and economic situation in the Latin American region. These key takeaways, prepared monthly by ATREVIA´s Analysis and Research team, serve to be a useful tool in understanding the evolution of the political-institutional state of Latin America, a need that the pandemic has further exaggerated
Current affairs in Latin America have been marked by political crises in many countries that have led to marches and social protests. In Peru, protesters against the dismissal of Pedro Castillo and the appointment of Dina Boluarte are not likely to give in until the president resigns.
In Bolivia, there were also clashes over the imprisonment of Governor Luis Fernando Camacho, who is under investigation for alleged terrorism. Meanwhile in Chile, public disapproval of Gabriel Boric’s government over the pardoning of 13 people who took part in the social unrest has left the government in one of its worst crises. Policy changes in different states and the reforms proposed by the presidents in charge have also taken centre stage on the Latin American political agenda, provoking various cases of social discontent.
In Mexico, the government’s so-called ‘Plan B’, which aims to modify electoral rules, has been accused by many of being antidemocratic; in Colombia, the health reform has generated voices of opposition, not only from opposition parties, but also from within the cabinet of President Gustavo Petro; and in Brazil, Lula da Silva has presented environmental and economic projects that would revoke 13 decrees that were once relevant to the government of Jair Bolsonaro.
For its part, Chile is preparing for the drafting of a new constitution; in Ecuador it seems that the political scenario will change after the regional elections where Correa won; and in Argentina presidential candidates are beginning to run.
