UN Women has called “The team of a million men” to win the match against gender inequality. It is an initiative that seeks to mobilize men and boys to adhere to the solidarity movement HeForShe, as defenders and agents of change to favor gender equality and against violence against women and girls.
The campaign “The Million Man Team”, promoted by ATREVIA Chile for UN Women, was presented in the National Stadium in Chile in the context of the Copa América 2015 that was celebrated in Santiago de Chile.
The Chilean president Michelle Bachelet, the Chilean chancellor Heraldo Muñoz, the minister director of SERNAM, , Claudia Pascual and the regional director of UN Women for the Americas and the Caribbean, Luiza Carvalho, together with other Chilean and Latin American authorities, volunteers and managers of the Copa América 2015 attended the event.
Diverse personalities from the host country of the Copa América joined the campaign, including the singer Gepe and the former captain of the Chilean football team Iván Zamorano, as well as artists and journalists, who helped the movement through social media.
“We are calling on men and boys in the region to unite as a team and win the match against inequality, adhering to HeForShe”, indicated Luiza Carvalho, regional director of UN Women for the Americas and the Caribbean. She added that “to overcome this panorama, the strength of men and women is needed. This is a match that everyone needs to win”.
“The million man team”
This campaign supports the concept of playing in a team and the passion for football to attract more men and boys towards the movement HeForShe and to raise awareness about the role that gender equality plays to eradicate discrimination and violence against women and girls.
The campaign went viral on social media through the hashtags #heforshe and #themillionmanteam. It had a high national impact and international repercussion held the support of volunteers who with their enthusiasm and positivity were a big driver in the support of personalities and authorities.
