Are we what we eat? Do we even know what we eat? A few weeks ago, the #EUChooseSafeFood2022 campaign was presented, an initiative that seeks to explain certain aspects of food safety to citizens, such as the so-called novel foods, food packaging, food waste, allergens, foodborne diseases, additives, and food contaminants.
Food safety is not only about protecting the health of consumers. This scientific task is also key to protecting animals and the environment from the risks associated with the food chain, all of which are involved in addressing One health.
That is precisely why communication, in this context, plays a crucial role. Information and how we convey it to consumers are the essential tools to achieve this purpose.
So what are the critical measures in terms of communication? Industry experts agree on transparency, honesty, visibility, commitment, measurement, analysis, and accountability. This is the only way to get the correct information and thus avoid misinformation and the dreaded fake news.
At ATREVIA, we are aware of the importance that food has in our lives as it is our most basic need. We consider it a priority to transmit confidence and ensure that safe choices are made when consuming one product or another. In the last meeting of our series, La Batidora by ATREVIA, we brought together renowned professionals to discuss and debate this highly relevant topic which already affects the entire European society. Therefore, the priority in the current context must be to approach consumers in a sincere and clear way so that they know and understand what type of food they consume. This can only be achieved by researching and analyzing what information needs to be conveyed and how this should be done so that the experts achieve a status that gives them credibility.
