La República is one of the most important daily economic and financial newspapers in Colombia who published a report that Núria Vilanova titled “The economic weight of our common language”. It reflects on how the Spanish language has an unbeatable cultural value in the Latin American region.
“The Spanish language is a heritage that Spanish and Latin American people share and that we are responsible for at both sides of the Atlantic. It is a cultural treasure with undoubted economic projections which has excellent future prospects, besides problems that every language faces. It is a strong language that has a future: this is one of the reflections that was highlighted from the recent 400 year anniversary celebration of the death of Miguel de Cervantes.
All Latin American people have a treasure in common, which is a language with universal projection that we must take care of and nourish. Our language is strong and important to everyone that speaks it in Spain and Latin America. It is generally recognized that in Spain the best Spanish is located in its “headquarters” in Valladolid. In Latin America, Colombia is home to one of the most exquisite uses of the Spanish language. Colombian philological tradition is rooted in the country’s history: Academia Colombiana de la Lengua (1871) (Colombian Academy of Language) is the oldest in America and it has famous Colombians like Rufino José Cuervo, Miguel Antonio Caro and José María Vergara y Vergara who contributed to the improvement of our language.
